The Death Site of Prophet John the Baptist (Yahya) is the historic hilltop fortress of Machaerus overlooking the Dead Sea. John was imprisoned and subsequently beheaded here by Herod Antipas because of his moral opposition to the king's unlawful marriage. While his head is believed to be buried in Damascus, his body is historically associated with Machaerus, Madaba Governorate.
